The Cape Winelands are a richly layered region, steeped in agricultural history that dates back to the 1600s. When the Dutch East India Company established the Cape as a refreshment station for passing ships journeying between Europe and the East, they laid the groundwork for what would become one of the world’s most celebrated wine-producing regions.
At the heart of the Winelands lie the historic towns of Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, and Paarl. Stellenbosch alone boasts more than 200 wine estates, but the region’s agricultural richness extends far beyond grapes. It is also home to farms producing citrus fruit, strawberries, olives, cattle, dairy and more.
The landscape is dotted with elegant examples of Cape Dutch architecture, some dating back to the late 17th century, and is equally known for its vibrant South African culinary scene, from relaxed vineyard picnics to award-winning gourmet dining.
Art lovers are in for a treat. Many wineries display impressive collections—some with dedicated galleries such as the prestigious Everard Read and Grande Provence—featuring both local and international works. One estate even holds the largest privately owned fine art collection in South Africa.
