In the second half of the year, the South African coastline becomes a stage for one of nature’s most moving spectacles. While the Bryde’s whale can be seen year-round, the winter months bring the arrival of humpback and southern right whales, migrating from icy Antarctic waters to give birth and nurse their young in the relative calm of the southern coast.
The southern right whale, once hunted to near extinction, earned its name from whalers who considered it the “right” whale to target—slow, curious, and rich in oil. Thankfully, protections have since restored their numbers, and today these majestic animals are celebrated rather than pursued.
Whales can sometimes be spotted all along the south and west coasts, including False Bay, a marine wonderland known as “The Serengeti of the Seas” due to its extraordinary biodiversity. This is largely thanks to the mixing of the warm Agulhas and cold Benguela currents, which influence the region’s unique climate and marine ecosystems.
But nowhere on earth offers better land-based whale watching than the cliffs of Hermanus, just 90 minutes from Cape Town. Here, you can watch whales breach just offshore as you enjoy a gourmet burger and a local craft beer. For a closer encounter, take to the water on a guided boat tour, or soar above the coastline on a helicopter flight.
